Our Food Pantry serves the Myrtle Beach, Garden City, Murrells Inlet and Surfside Beach areas. We organize food drives and collaborate with other food vendors to alleviate an on-going need for people to receive nutritious meals. This year, we distributed thousands of dollars worth of food to our area households.
Some of the most vulnerable populations, the elderly and children, are located in the South Strand. The Society has set up a parish-based Food Pantry which is sometimes the only source of nutritious food.
Studies show that a diet balanced with the appropriate food groups leads to greater capacity and the energy to focus on work and studies; helps prevent diseases such as high blood pressure and diabetes, and is linked to an improved immune system and cardiovascular health.
Feeding the RIGHT type of food is an important factor in helping break the cycle of poverty. By providing foods consistent with MyPlate and educating our friends about the importance of a balanced diet, together, we can create lasting, systemic change! MyPlate encourages a new way of thinking about food and is the USDA replacement for the previous Food Pyramid.
